Current Events – Where to Find Information on Current Events

Current events are newsworthy topics that are happening right now. They can be local, national or international and have an immediate impact. Often times they spark debate and discussion and may impact the future. These are the types of topics that are most likely to be covered in news sources such as newspapers, magazines and TV and radio.

While these types of sources tend to be more short and provide little or no analysis, they are a good place to start your search for information about an event. They are also a good source for primary source documents.

Scholarly sources take longer to produce and are most likely to provide context, historical perspective and/or evidence-based research on an event. They are also a good place to find information on an event that has been ongoing for several months or older.

The year ahead will be a challenging one for institutional journalism. Globally major media companies will continue to struggle with declining advertising revenues and as new technology reshapes the way audiences find and consume news content. Traditional news organizations will face attacks from populist politicians who seek to undermine their role in fostering informed democratic debate.

A recent example is the controversy over President Trump’s call to remove the name of a US football team from a city whose residents consider it a racial slur. Other examples include the US-Russia Alaska summit, a rise in student protests across Europe and severe floods that have swept through parts of western Pakistan.
