How to Write a News Update

A news update is an article that gives a timely account of an event or development. The goal is to keep readers informed about what’s happening in the world around them, whether it’s an earthquake, a celebrity death or an anniversary. A good news update is a story that’s relevant, interesting and significant to readers. When writing a news update, consider the audience, what would interest them about the topic and how you can best present it to them.

Use names and titles whenever possible, rather than just initials. It’s important for readers to be able to relate to the people in your stories, so it’s important to use their full names or at least first and last initials. Middle initials should be used only when there’s a compelling reason to do so, like when a person has a common name or if it will help distinguish the individual in a photo caption.
