World news (also known as international news or foreign coverage) is the news media jargon for any type of reporting that involves a country outside of one’s own. It may include reports sent from abroad by a correspondent or a journalist who is based in another city, or – less commonly – may cover global events involving national interest such as wars or summits of multilateral organizations. Historically, such journalism was carried out by full-time reporters based in the capital city of a foreign nation; however, in the modern era of instant communications and the proliferation of the internet and television news services, more than ever, “world” news is reported by freelancers who may travel or work from home.
The term world news can also refer to a particular newspaper or magazine that specializes in covering global affairs; in the United States, there are several such publications, including The New York Times and The Washington Post. In addition, a number of local and regional newspapers and magazines feature news stories from around the world, particularly those of historical significance.
ABC’s World News Now is an overnight news broadcast that airs Monday through Friday, with a live feed at its headquarters in Los Angeles and a tape delayed version for the majority of its stations. The program features a mix of general and off-beat stories along with weather forecasts, sports highlights, and repurposed segments and story packages from other ABC News programs. Its tone is often lighthearted, irreverent and even humorous. The broadcast is co-anchored by Rhiannon Ally and Andrew Dymburt, who anchor the network’s morning show Good Morning America First Look. When a regular anchor leaves the program, they are honored with a ceremonial “goodbye” in which their cardboard cutout is placed on the studio’s rafters or monitors.
