The study of global affairs focuses on the interactions between nation-states and non-state actors across the world. It includes diplomacy, trade, and security as well as broader issues such as global poverty, human rights, and environmental degradation. The study of global affairs gained prominence following the decolonization of many new nations as they sought to establish their identities in an increasingly interconnected world.
Global affairs students gain a deep understanding of the political, economic, cultural, and environmental processes that shape our globalized world through core courses. They then select a thematic or regional concentration to further tailor their degree and to fit their career aspirations. They are encouraged to take advantage of international opportunities, such as internships and study abroad programs.
As the second quarter of 2025 begins, the impact of Trump’s policies will reverberate throughout the global economy. Disruptive trade policies, supply chain volatility and geopolitical turbulence will create significant financial, social and security risk worldwide. The war in Ukraine, high inflation and lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic will continue to drive geoeconomic friction, and a sluggish global economy will contribute to rising unemployment and inequality.
In the fall of their senior year, global affairs majors can choose to write a capstone project in the Global Affairs Senior Capstone Seminar (GLBL 4499), or a senior essay in a substantive seminar or in the Global Affairs Senior Essay course GLBL 4500. In either case, they are responsible for securing their own academic advisor and secondary reader.
